Lesson Plan: Synthetic Materials Through History

In this lesson, students will learn about the history of synthesized materials through reading an article. There are a series of activities to help promote literacy in the science classroom related to the reading. This lesson could be easily used as plans for a substitute teacher, as most of the activities are self-guided.

  • Alloys, Molecular Structure, Physical Properties | High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lab: Chemistry of Art through Alloys and Metal Plating

In this lab, students will learn about and experiment with the process of electroless chemical plating in order to create a piece of artwork made from a combination of copper, zinc-plated copper, and brass.

  • Physical Properties, Heat, Alloys | High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lab: Investigating Heat Treatments and Properties of Steel

In this lab, students will take on the perspective of a material scientist working for a company that makes shocks and struts for car suspension by applying three different heat treatments to steel coils. Students will test how these heat treatments affect the properties of the high carbon steel.

  • Review, Culminating Project, Mixtures, Separating Mixtures, Beer's Law, Concentration, Conductivity, Redox Reaction, Half Reactions, pH, Titrations, Buffers, Indicators, Ionic Bonding, Covalent Bonding, Alloys, Percent Composition, Le Châtelier's Principle, Enthalpy, Calorimetry | High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lesson Plan: AP Chemistry Experimental Evidence Review

In this lesson, students will evaluate data from 16 simulated lab experiments that were designed to mirror the Recommended Labs from the College Board. Corresponding lab experiments and demonstration options have also been included for teacher reference.

  • Physical Properties, Chemical Properties, Elements, Alloys, Chemical Bond | Middle School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lesson Plan: Behind the Metal

In this lesson, students will learn about the properties of metals. The students will work in small groups to create a video to anthropomorphize their selected metal as though it were a heavy metal musician and share the video with their peers.

  • Matter, Physical Properties, Chemical Properties, Mixtures, Elements, Alloys | High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lesson Plan: Observing Properties of Those Marvelous Metals

In this lesson, students will see how metals, both pure metals and alloys, may have different physical and chemical properties. They will investigate how these properties contribute to their usefulness in manufacturing and construction.

  • Density, Physical Properties, Chemical Properties, Physical Change, Chemical Change, Graphing, Alloys | Middle School, High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lesson Plan: The Captivating Chemistry of Coins

In this lesson, students will develop a better understanding of physical and chemical properties of matter by comparing the composition of different pennies. This is done by determining the density of different pennies which will be compared to the density of different metals.
