Stoichiometry Lab with Limiting and Percent Yield

Started about 7 years ago by Lacy Buck.

I am looking for a good simple lab for limiting and percent yield.  The lab I had done before didn't work great with the supplies I have at my current school.  The filtration took much to long (since we don't have a vacuum pump) and we were not able to wash the precipitate with water to obtain a good percent yield.  I was considering trying this again but switching my reactants to Al foil and CuCl2.  I'm wondering if someone has a lab that works great for them for this topic. Thanks!

Lacy, How did this lab go?

I'm wanting this to be a lab report lab, so I am going to try the reaction with Al and CuCl2 (I've attached a copy of what I have put together and things I found on-line).

Hi Ladies, I am so sorry I forgot to post that lab yesterday. It has been a busy week. I will post it later today for you, but I have also seen a limiting lab done with candy as well. The smore is a great idea too.

Thanks Jodi, that video would make a good introduction to show the students.

Was looking for resources for my next unit, solutions, and found this - https://teachchemistry.org/classroom-resources/limiting-reactant-animation

I don't do a percent yield/limiting reactant lab (it's not in our curriculum... how crazy!), but I have seen one with making cookies or smores. I try to incorporate food whenever I can in the classroom b/c it's a perfect hook to get the kids interested. Did a quick google search - check it out - http://www.teachnlearnchem.com/Keys%20Worksheets/KEYS%20Stoich/PDF/Smores%20key.pdf

It did not have the limiting/excess to it. It could be modified but I just did the % yield. I will look tomorrow at school and see what else I did. I am interested to see what other people use as well.

Did it have a limiting/excess twist to it?  Or do you think that would be something I could easily add?

I did a percent yield lab and all they did was pop popcorn. If you are interested I can send you the information tomorrow.
