How can we determine whether students truly understand the chemistry behind their laboratory results? Traditional laboratory assessments, including lab reports, worksheets, and Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) responses, provide valuable information about student learning, but they may not always reveal how students arrive at their conclusions. Additionally, with the increasing availability of generative AI, understanding what students know and can explain independently has become even more important.
In this webinar, we will explore how oral assessments can be incorporated into existing high school chemistry laboratories to evaluate students' conceptual understanding and scientific reasoning. Participants will learn how to transform traditional post-lab questions into meaningful scientific conversations, develop questions that probe student understanding, and use simple rubrics to assess responses. We will also discuss practical strategies for making oral assessments manageable, equitable, and supportive of student learning. Attendees will leave with examples and tools they can adapt to their own chemistry classrooms.
