Grade Level
High School
Objectives
By the end of this activity, students should be able to
- Answer basic questions related to fundamental chemical measurement topics, such as laboratory equipment, significant digits, metric system, temperature, and the mole.
- Use problem-solving skills to decipher a riddle by decoding letters.
Chemistry Topics
This activity supports students’ understanding of
- Quantitative Chemistry
- Measurement
- Laboratory Equipment
- Metric System
- Mole
- Periodic Table
Time
Teacher Preparation: minimal
Lesson: 15 – 20 minutes
Materials
- Student handout
Safety
- No specific safety precautions need to be observed for this activity.
Teacher Notes
- This activity was chosen as the ChemFun section of the November 2024 issue of Chemistry Solutions.
- This activity was designed to be a fun overview or review activity for students to test their knowledge of chemical measurement. The topics included as part of the questions in this activity would be covered in a typical high school chemistry course.
- This activity could be used as a warm-up/bell-ringer activity near the end of the school year, or shared with students who finish an assignment earlier than others.
- Note that not all of the letters are needed to solve the riddles, some additional letters are included as distractions in an effort to limit a student’s ability to solve the riddles without actually answering the chemistry questions.
- An Answer Key document has been provided for teacher reference.
For the Student
Directions
