  • Radioactive Isotopes, Alpha/Beta/Gamma Decay, Radiation | High School, Middle School

Simulation: Radioactive Decay Mark as Favorite (24 Favorites)

In this simulation, students will investigate why radioactive decay occurs, the changes that occur in the nucleus during three common types of decay (alpha, beta, and gamma decay), and what types of materials can be used to protect against each type of radiation. Students will also have a chance to test their understanding of these concepts with a 10-question quiz.

  • Alpha/Beta/Gamma Decay, Radiation, Radioactive Isotopes | Middle School, High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Activity: Simulation Activity: Radioactive Decay Mark as Favorite (12 Favorites)

In this activity, students will use a radioactive decay simulation to investigate why radioactive decay occurs, the changes that occur in the nucleus during three common types of decay (alpha, beta, and gamma decay), and what types of materials can be used to protect against each type of radiation. Students will also have a chance to test their understanding of these concepts with a 10-question quiz.

  • Isotopes, Atoms, Electrons, Subatomic Particles, Elements, History, Introduction, Review, Alpha/Beta/Gamma Decay, Radioactive Isotopes | Middle School, High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Activity: What are Isotopes? Video Questions Mark as Favorite (58 Favorites)

In this lesson, students will watch a video and answer questions about isotopes. They will learn about the discovery of isotopes, the difference between chemical and nuclear reactions, different kinds of radioactive decay, and some uses of radioactive isotopes.

  • Radioactive Isotopes, History, Subatomic Particles, Model of the Atom, Atomic Theory | Middle School, High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Video: Ernest Rutherford Video Mark as Favorite (68 Favorites)

Rutherford's initial research was studying alpha particles, which he hypothesized were helium nuclei. With the help of Hans Geiger, Rutherford conducted the gold foil experiment, which justifies that the nucleus of an atom is a dense collection of protons and contains the majority of an atom’s mass. It also inferred that most of the atom is empty space and electrons are not located in the nucleus. He won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1908 for his studies on radioactive substances.

  • Periodic Table, History, Radioactive Isotopes | Elementary School, Middle School, High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Video: Astatine Video Mark as Favorite (11 Favorites)

In this video, Sam Kean tells stories about astatine, the rarest element in the universe.
