Limiting Reactant, Stoichiometry, Balancing Equations, Mole Concept, Dimensional Analysis, Molar Mass | High School
Activity: Sweet Stoichiometry Reactions
In this activity, students will use candy to investigate stoichiometry and mole-gram relationships in chemical equations, but could also be used to introduce the concept of limiting reactants.
-
Solute & Solvent, Molarity, Tyndall Effect, Concentration, Stoichiometry, Dimensional Analysis, Mole Concept | High School
Activity: Solubility & Solutions
In this inquiry activity, students investigate types of solutions, identifying the solute and solvent, and classifying each solution. They them solve stoichiometry problems involving solutions of different concentrations.
-
Balancing Equations, Predicting Products | High School, Middle School
Activity: Snowman Challenge
In this activity, students practice completing and balancing chemical equations with a partner.
-
Balancing Equations, Limiting Reactant, Stoichiometry, Dimensional Analysis, Mole Concept, Measurements | High School
Activity: S'more Stoichiometry
In this activity, students determine the number of graham crackers and chocolate pieces required to complete a “reaction” with a given quantity of marshmallows (the limiting reactant). They then use the same thought process with a problem involving a real chemical reaction.
-
Percent Yield, Limiting Reactant, Stoichiometry, Dimensional Analysis | High School
Activity: Cookie Stoichiometry
In this activity, students use a chocolate chip cookie recipe to answer questions related to stoichiometry, percent yield, and limiting reactants.
-
Classification of Reactions, Culminating Project, Review, Interdisciplinary | High School
Project: Classifying Reaction Types Mini Poster
In this activity, students display their knowledge of the five main types of chemical reactions on a miniature sized poster.
-
Chemical Change, Gas Laws, Stoichiometry, Balancing Equations, Volume, Dimensional Analysis, Mole Concept | High School
Project: Air Bag Stoichiometry
In this lab, students make real-world connections of stoichiometry with the design of car air bags.
-
Exothermic & Endothermic, Classification of Reactions, Energy Diagrams, Bond Energy, Activation Energy, Temperature, Chemical Change | Middle School, High School
Simulation: Energy Changes in Chemical Reactions
In the November 2016 simulation, students will evaluate the energy changes in an endothermic and an exothermic chemical reaction. Students will have the opportunity to compare how energy is absorbed and released in each reaction, and will make a connection between the standard energy diagrams associated with each reaction type.
-
Balancing Equations, Conservation of Mass | Middle School, High School
Simulation: Balancing Chemical Equations
The simulation for the September 2014 issue comes from PhET and helps students practice balancing chemical equations. AACT helped fund the conversion of this popular simulation into a format that is compatible with all devices, including iPads. PhET provides teacher’s guides for many of their simulations, and teacher-generated activities that can accompany the simulations.

Balancing Equations, Conservation of Mass, Conservation of Matter, Conservation of Matter, Chemical Change, Chemical Change, Conservation of Mass, Polyatomic Ions, Precipitate | Middle School, High School
Activity: Simulation Activity: Balancing Chemical Equations
In this activity, students will learn how to count atoms and how to balance chemical equations using a simulation and games from PhET Interactive Simulations.
