Teaching and Chemistry Interests

With over 15 years of experience in teaching chemistry across various educational levels—spanning middle school, high school, and AP courses—I have developed a pedagogical approach that emphasizes chemistry as a fundamental lens for understanding the natural world. My objective is to equip students with the analytical skills needed for making informed life choices and career decisions. In addition to classroom instruction, I actively facilitate extracurricular initiatives such as science clubs and specialized chemistry programs, fostering hands-on engagement with the subject matter. Furthermore, I provide advisory support to the district on matters pertaining to chemistry education and broader scientific policy frameworks.

Why I Want to Serve

With over 15 years of experience teaching chemistry, and also physics, and geology, I have developed a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies involved in science education. Throughout my career, I have encountered a wide array of challenges commonly faced by both novice and experienced chemistry instructors. This includes supporting new educators as they navigate the complexities of chemistry content delivery, sourcing appropriate teaching materials, and ensuring the implementation of safe laboratory practices in educational settings.

The effective teaching of chemistry necessitates a multifaceted approach that integrates pedagogical skills, practical experience, a well-established professional network, and a robust support system. This is particularly crucial for new educators, who require guidance on best practices in chemistry instruction, as well as opportunities for deeper content mastery and professional development.

In my tenure, I have leveraged my expertise and qualifications to advocate for and assist teachers both within my district and on a broader scale across the state and nation. My focus has been on fostering a culture of safety in laboratory environments, promoting innovative teaching methodologies, and facilitating access to essential resources that empower educators to thrive in their roles.

I am confident in my ability to provide targeted support to fellow chemistry educators, ensuring they have the necessary tools and strategies to succeed. Understanding the critical need for a support mechanism in the chemistry classroom, I am committed to ensuring that all chemistry and science teachers benefit from the resources and guidance offered by the American Association of Chemistry Teachers (AACT).

Teaching and Chemistry Interests

I have taught middle school science for 22 of my 25 years in education, primarily focusing on general science with some experience teaching various levels of Chemistry. I currently teach 7th grade, covering Physics and Life Science. Additionally, I lead an exploratory science course that allows flexibility in content, particularly in Chemistry. In this class, I incorporate a range of labs, including chemical reactions and flame tests. These hands-on experiences enhance student engagement and deepen their understanding of scientific concepts. Students particularly enjoy exploring topics beyond the core curriculum, fostering curiosity and a greater appreciation for science.

Why I Want to Serve

As a dedicated middle school educator with over 20 years of experience, I am committed to making chemistry and science accessible, engaging, and meaningful for young learners. For the past two years, I have served as a science coach at my school, supporting fellow educators and helping to design a new science exploration course aimed at increasing student exposure to different scientific concepts and enhancing instructional support.

This role has strengthened my passion for both student-centered learning and teacher collaboration. It has also inspired me to seek opportunities to advocate for the unique needs of middle school educators and learners. I am excited about the opportunity to serve as a middle school representative for AACT, where I can contribute to the development of age-appropriate resources, promote best practices in science instruction, and support professional growth through collaboration and idea sharing.

I believe strongly in creating excitement for STEM and in empowering teachers through shared knowledge and community. Serving in this role would allow me to represent middle school voices, advance high-quality science education, and help shape the future of chemistry instruction at a critical stage in students’ academic development.
