Advancing Science Literacy with Lesson Plans that Are Aligned with CCSS and NGSS Mark as Favorite (0 Favorites)

WEBINAR (55 minutes) recorded April 09, 2019

Science teachers are being asked to incorporate more reading and writing into their lessons to support literacy in language arts. To achieve this goal, teachers can use magazine articles that discuss the science behind everyday life. In this session, we will explain how we developed engaging lesson plans based on articles published in ChemMatters magazine. These lesson plans will improve your students’ understanding of scientific concepts and allow them to relate their learning to their everyday lives. The lesson plans will also help your students think critically and understand the nature of scientific knowledge. We created learning goals and assessments that are based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and that include presentations, debates, and other creative projects. We used the 5E model and the backward-design process to structure the lesson plans. The lesson plans were field-tested by high school teachers across the country, and they may be modified to address a wide range of students’ abilities and interests. You may use them in the classroom or be inspired to build similar lesson plans.
