  • Balancing Equations, Conservation of Mass, Chemical Change | High School, Middle School

    Demonstration: Identifying Chemical Reactions

In this demonstration, students observe a series of teacher led demonstrations to learn how to identify evidence that a chemical reaction has occurred, how to write a word equation to explain a chemical reaction, and how to convert a word equation to a balanced chemical equation.

  • Balancing Equations, Conservation of Mass | High School, Middle School

Activity: Balancing Equations with Note Cards

In this activity, students will balance equations and get immediate feedback on whether they are accurate or not while trying to solve a challenge. This activity works best as a review activity after balancing and the law of conservation of matter has been taught.

  • Balancing Equations, Conservation of Mass | High School, Middle School

    Activity: Balancing Legos

In this activity students use Legos to model the reactants and products in a chemical reaction. They use these “atoms” and “molecules” to balance the chemical reaction in order to demonstrate the law of conservation of matter.

  • Molecular Formula, Balancing Equations, Conservation of Mass | High School, Middle School

Lesson Plan: Counting Atoms & Balancing Equations

In this lesson, students will learn how to count atoms and how to balance chemical equations using videos, simulations and games.

  • Balancing Equations, Conservation of Mass, Photosynthesis | Middle School

    Activity: Achieving a Photosynthetic Balance

In this activity, students will use candies to model the rearrangement of atoms from reactant to products during photosynthesis.

  • Introduction, Conservation of Mass, Balancing Equations, Conservation of Mass, Limiting Reactant | High School, Middle School

    Activity: Kinesthetic Reactions

In this lesson students, through their physical movement, will model the law of conservation of mass during a chemical reaction. Students will also explore the concepts of limiting and excess reactants as well as balancing a chemical equation. Through this activity they also develop a means of representing particles at the molecular level.

  • Review, Model of the Atom, Isotopes, Balancing Equations, Atomic Mass, Subatomic Particles, Lewis Dot Diagrams, Electrons, Ions | Middle School, High School

    Activity: Tic-Tac-Toe Review

In this activity students collaborate to complete tic-tac-toe review questions to prepare for a test on the atomic structure unit. The idea behind the activity is to give students choice and you can read more about the inspiration for the activity in the May issue of Chemistry Solutions.

  • Chemical Change, Interdisciplinary, Molecular Formula, Conservation of Mass, Balancing Equations, Conservation of Mass, Reversible Reactions, Chemical Change, Photosynthesis | Middle School

Lesson Plan: The Building Blocks of Photosynthesis

In this lesson, students will use colored blocks to represent the elements in photosynthesis and illustrate how they are broken down and reassembled to create glucose.

  • Balancing Equations, Predicting Products | Middle School, High School

    Activity: Snowman Challenge

In this activity, students practice completing and balancing chemical equations with a partner.

  • Chemical Change, Precipitate, Balancing Equations, Chemical Change, Chemistry Basics, Solubility Rules | Middle School, High School

    Lab: Predicting Precipitates

In this lab, students use solubility rules to predict which chemical reactions will produce precipitates.

  • Observations, Chemical Change, Balancing Equations | Middle School, High School

    Lab: Chemical Reactions & Equations

In this lesson, students will observe a series of reactions, make observations, and then write balanced chemical equations to chemically describe what they observed.

  • Balancing Equations, Conservation of Mass | High School, Middle School

    Simulation: Balancing Chemical Equations

The simulation for the September 2014 issue comes from PhET and helps students practice balancing chemical equations. AACT helped fund the conversion of this popular simulation into a format that is compatible with all devices, including iPads. PhET provides teacher’s guides for many of their simulations, and teacher-generated activities that can accompany the simulations.

  • Balancing Equations, Conservation of Mass | High School, Middle School

Activity: Simulation Activity: Balancing Chemical Equations

In this activity, students will learn how to count atoms and how to balance chemical equations using a simulation and games from PhET Interactive Simulations.
