  • Percent Composition, Identifying an Unknown, Net Ionic Equation, Stoichiometry, Error Analysis, Molar Mass | High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lab: Analysis of Carbonate Compounds

In this lab, students calculate the molar masses of three unknown carbonate compounds by measuring the amount of product (CO2) produced by a reaction with hydrochloric acid.

  • Mixtures, Chemical Change, Physical Change, Observations, Density, Acid Base Reactions, Chemical Change, Mixtures | Elementary School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lab: Analyzing a Lava Lamp

In this lab, students create a mixture of oil, water and food coloring, and then add an Alka-Seltzer tablet, to create a homemade lava lamp. Student will record their observations during each step of the process and answer follow-up questions about the chemical and physical changes that took place.

  • Physical Change, Chemical Change, Solute & Solvent, Observations, Inferences, Physical Change, Identifying an Unknown | Elementary School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lesson Plan: Alien Invasion?

In this lesson, students will explore both physical and chemical changes as they try to help the Department of Homeland Security analyze and identify materials found in a mysterious capsule. Students will examine and observe an unknown object (a frozen water balloon) as it changes (melts). They then mix combinations of everyday substances to observe chemical changes.

  • Solubility, Acid Base Reactions, Titrations, Indicators, Concentration, pH | High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lab: Alka-Seltzer & Gas Solubility

In this lab, students will use a reaction to investigate temperature and the solubility of carbon dioxide and will use a neutralization reaction and an indicator to verify the amount of carbon dioxide produced at each temperature.

  • Limiting Reactant, Acid Base Reactions, Stoichiometry, Indicators, pH, Dimensional Analysis, Mole Concept, Measurements, Concentration, Molarity | High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lab: Acid/Base Stoichiometry

In this lab, students experience a limiting reactant and can physically see the difference in amounts of product generated. They also see which reactant is in excess.

  • Titrations, Limiting Reactant, Acid Base Reactions, Indicators, Chemical Change, Equivalence Point, Stoichiometry, Balancing Equations, Chemical Change, Graphing, Error Analysis, Chemical Change, Error Analysis, Measurements, Concentration, Molarity | High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lab: Acid-Base Mole Ratio

In this lab, students study several concepts, including acid-base reactions, limiting reactants, and stoichiometry, by observing the contained reaction of acetic acid (diluted vinegar) with sodium hydrogen carbonate (baking soda) in an unconventional, cost effective titration.

  • Strong vs Weak, Titrations, Acid Base Reactions, Equivalence Point, Indicators, pH, Concentration, Molarity, Measurements | High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lab: Acid Base Reactions

In this lab, students will witness a reaction between an acid and base. One will be strong, and the other may be weak or strong--it's up to them to determine.

  • Mixtures, Physical Change, Physical Change, Solute & Solvent, Phase Changes, Distillation, Introduction, Separating Mixtures, Interdisciplinary, Mixtures | Elementary School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lesson Plan: Now I Can Drink the Water!

In this lesson, students review important concepts of the water cycle and then design, test, and evaluate a working model of a desalination plant (a distiller).

  • Molarity, Concentration, Mixtures, Solute & Solvent, Dimensional Analysis, Mole Concept, Measurements | High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lab: Molarity of a Solution

In this lab, students calculate concentrations of and perform dilutions of Kool-Aid and juice solutions.

  • Ionic Bonding, Naming Compounds, Precipitate, Ions, Molecular Formula | Middle School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Activity: Bond with a Classmate

In this activity, students are assigned an ion and form bonds with their classmates, recording the formula and name of the compound they created.

  • Density, Observations, Inferences, Mixtures, Mixtures | Middle School, High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Demonstration: Density Tubes

In this demonstration, students will have the opportunity to observe and analyze the density of a solution. Students will interpret their observations as they compare the density of the solution with plastic components.

  • Balancing Equations, Conservation of Mass, Conservation of Matter, Conservation of Matter, Chemical Change, Chemical Change, Conservation of Mass, Polyatomic Ions, Precipitate | Middle School, High School

Activity: Simulation Activity: Balancing Chemical Equations

In this activity, students will learn how to count atoms and how to balance chemical equations using a simulation and games from PhET Interactive Simulations.
