The ChemEd2019 biennial conference is one of the largest for educators involved in teaching chemistry in North America. It is an opportunity for educators to gather together for five days to learn and exchange their teaching ideas in a friendly and motivating environment. ChemEd creates a community for dedicated and involved science educators and takes place on a college campus allowing for hands on labs, workshops, and demonstrations.

As chemistry teachers around the country plan activities for their students, AACT will be highlighting resources from our high school resource library that can be used to reinforce topics in different units throughout the school year. Our last post highlighted resources that could be used to support a Chemical Names and Formulas unit. We will now focus on articles, videos, simulations, and activities that could be used in a Stoichiometry unit.

Every month AACT will spotlight a passionate member who is dedicated to enhancing chemistry inside and outside the classroom. This month we spotlight AACT President and AP chemistry teacher at Libertyville High School, Sherri Rukes.

This past summer AACT hosted an AP Chemistry Content Writing Team to create AP chemistry focused teaching resources for our High School Classroom Resource Library. The four teachers chosen focused on creating teaching resources directly related to the Learning Objectives for the topics of equilibrium, intermolecular forces, photoelectron spectroscopy, Coulomb’s Law, electrolysis, reaction mechanisms, and kinetics. This week we are publishing the last two resources from our content team.

In the spirit of the NCW theme, AACT hosted a content writing contest for current teacher members. This year’s winners were Monticello Middle School teacher, Jennifer Smith, from Monticello, Illinois and South Lewis High School teacher, Anne Huntress, from Turin, New York. Both teachers created an exciting and unique lesson plan inspired by the theme of NCW.

There will be many opportunities to connect with AACT and other members at the AACT booth and at the workshops that we are planning for K-12 teachers of chemistry. In our last news post, we looked at classroom resources that focused on equilibrium. Now we are moving on to lessons and activities that can be used to support a unit plan for teaching acids and bases. This includes pH, acid theories, strong versus weak acids and bases, titrations, indicators, and buffers.
